The Riverland is a region in the Australian state of South Australia , which derives its name from the Murray River . It is located about 200 km northeast of Adelaide and includes the towns of Barmera, Berri , Loxton, Renmark , Paringa and Waikerie.

The population is approximately 34,000. The largest town with approx. 4,300 inhabitants is Renmark.

geography

Riverland is largely flat and is only about 20 meters above sea level.

climate

The mean temperature in January is 32 ° C. The annual rainfall is only about 260 mm.

environment

The Murray River region is severely affected by intensive agriculture. Water abstraction and the introduction of fertilizers not only lead to a decline in fish stocks and lower numbers of waterfowl, but also endanger the centuries-old eucalyptus trees ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis ) on the banks of the Murray River.

economy

The economy is determined by agriculture. A third of all Australian citrus fruits and more than a quarter of Australian wine is grown in Riverland (480,000 tons in 2005).
