Phonsavan (Lao: ໂພນ ສະ ຫວັນ) is the capital of the Lao province of Xieng Khouang . Phonsavan is also called Muang Pek or, like the district itself, Xieng Khouang . The town, which has 57,000 inhabitants, is known for its nearby clay jugs .

City layout and history

Since the old district capital Muang Khoun was almost completely bombed during the war between the Pathet Lao and the USA , Phonsavan was built as the new provincial capital in the mid-1970s. The city was laid out over a large area with dead straight and sometimes very wide streets. However, one looks in vain for street signs and house numbers. Phonsavan extends on both sides of the Nam Kat River. In the middle of the city there are rice fields. The hospital, police headquarters, barracks, high school and most of the authorities are on a wide avenue in the south of the city, while most of the shops, markets and the post office are on the main street in the north of the city. All of the city's major streets have been paved since 2002, and they were connected to the power grid in 2004.

Attractions

Memorial to the fallen Vietnamese.
Monument to the fallen Laotians.

In the city itself - apart from an SOS Children's Village with an attached school - two monuments are worth seeing, each of which offers a beautiful view of the city. The memorial to the memory of the fallen Laotians was erected in 1998 in the southeast of the city. 4000 people are said to be buried here, and 1500 names have so far been recorded on the name boards. About one kilometer away, the memorial to commemorate the fallen Vietnamese was erected in 1992 in the southwest of the city. The ashes of the soldiers originally buried here were transferred to Vietnam in 1996, after which the facility was redesigned as a memorial to the friendship between Laos and Vietnam.

The old Phonsavan cemetery with various Buddhist, Chinese and some Christian graves is also worth visiting. It is located on and on a hill in the northeast of the city, from which there is also a beautiful view of the surroundings.

Transport links

Phonsavan has a small domestic airport Xieng Khouang (IATA code: XKH), from which there is a daily flight connection to and from Vientiane .

The bus station for national buses is about four kilometers west of the center. From here several buses run daily to Vientiane and one bus to Luang Prabang . The bus station for buses in the immediate vicinity of the city is located in the southwest of the city. From here you can reach Muang Khoun and the plains of the clay jugs several times a day.

Surroundings

A few kilometers south of the city, the plain of the jugs , one of the country's main attractions, is worth seeing. About 30 kilometers southeast of Phonsavan is the old city of Muang Khoun , which can be reached via a good road and is a worthwhile destination.
