Wagga Wagga [ ˈwɔɡɐwɔɡɐ ] ( Austr. Mostly just Wagga ) is a town in New South Wales on the Murrumbidgee River .

With just under 48,000 inhabitants, Wagga Wagga is the largest city in the interior of New South Wales, the fifth largest city in the interior of Australia and the capital of the Riverina .

After Charles Sturt was the first white man to come to the area in 1829, it was settled in the 1830s. The name Wagga Wagga comes from the Wiradjuri - Aboriginal language and means "many crows".

Wagga Wagga is the center and administrative seat of the local administrative area Wagga Wagga City and the seat of the airline Regional Express Airlines .

geography

The city is 475 km southwest of Sydney , 240 km west of Canberra and 440 km northeast of Melbourne at the intersection of the Sturt Highway (west-east) with the Olympic Highway (north-south).

It is also halfway on the Sydney-Melbourne rail link. In addition, a branch line branches off to Tumbarumba here.
