The city is located on the west bank of the Missouri River and about 40 km northwest of Kansas City (Missouri) . The city is also part of the Kansas City metropolitan area .

The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.15.

The median age in the city was 34.8 years. 26% were minors, 8.5% were between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.6% were between 25 and 44 years, 23.9% were between 45 and 64 and 10% were older than 65 years. The city's gender distribution was as follows, 53.9% male and 46.1% female.

Leavenworth is home to a multitude of different religions due to international military influences. Leavenworth was one of the largest Jewish communities in Kansas in the mid to late 19th century. In 1870 Leavenworth had several Orthodox Jewish communities; however, many Jews converted to Christianity over the generations. There are four Catholic congregations, two Methodist churches: the First United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church, and many other religious groups. Many Leavenworth residents also attend services at Fort Leavenworth, the second largest US military Catholic community.
