The federal prison in Leavenworth / lɛvənˌwɜrθ, -wərθ / (officially English. United States Penitentiary (USP) Leavenworth ) is a prison the federal government in Leavenworth , in the US state of Kansas .

The institution is divided into an area for serious criminals and an area for the normal prison system. In the classification of the US prison system , the prison was classified as a "Maximum Security Prison". In 2005 it was downgraded to “Medium Security Prison”. The penal facility is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons , the penal administration of the American federal government.

The institution maintains a so-called UNICOR operation (the largest in the USA), whereby the working inmates are used in textile, furniture and printing production. It is occupied with up to 2,100 occupants. The federal prison is located near the United States Disciplinary Barracks , the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility, and the Lansing Correctional Facility . These four major penal institutions represent a major economic factor in the Leavenworth area.

history

Leavenworth Federal Prison opened in 1903 following a resolution passed by the US Congress in 1895 . Previously, the prisoners were housed at Fort Leavenworth .

Do not confuse the federal prison in Leavenworth with the United States Disciplinary Barracks designated military prison , which in 2002 to Fort Leavenworth was housed and since then a new plant has the north.
