Lansing is a city of 11,265 people (as of 2010) on the banks of the Missouri River in Leavenworth County in northeast Kansas . Lansing is the second largest city in the County and forms with Kansas City to Kansas City .
history
Lansing is named after the New York- born businessman William Lansing Taylor (1831-1886), who served in the infantry during the American Civil War and opened a business and post office. Taylor later changed his name to James William Lansing. He owned a piece of land that was divided into parcels in 1878. The settlement was called "Town of Lansing" (Eng. "City of Lansing") and only in 1959 was declared a self-governing city. The city is known for its Lansing Correctional Facility , which, among other things, carries out the death penalty. Well-known delinquents were Dick Hickock , Perry Smith and Lowell Andrews , all known from Truman Capote's factual novel in cold blood . Until 1990 the prison was called "Kansas State Penitentiary".
