Roads and Maritime Services ( RMS for short ) is the road and traffic authority in New South Wales , Australia . It is responsible for the maintenance, expansion and operation of the nationwide road network. It also operates the driving license and registration offices and monitors ports and waterways.
The authority was launched on November 1, 2011 as a merger of the Roads and Traffic Authority ( RTA for short ) and NSW Maritime . Planning authority was transferred to the Transport for New South Wales authority , which was founded on the same day.
Road network
The road network operated by Roads and Maritime Services has a total length of 18,028 km, including 4,269 km funded by the National Roads Administration and 163 km privately financed toll roads. This includes 5051 bridges , 22 tunnels and 3751 traffic lights . The remaining 144,750 km in New South Wales are managed by the Local Government Areas .

Car ferries
As part of the road infrastructure, the RMS also operates various car ferries , these are basically free of charge:
- Berowra Waters Ferry, across Berowra Waters
- Lawrence Ferry, across the Clarence River
- Mortlake Ferry, across the Parramatta River in Sydney
- Sackville Ferry, across the Hawkesbury River near the village of Sackville
- Speewa Ferry, across the Murray River between New South Wales and Victoria
- Ulmarra Ferry, across the Clarence River
- Webbs Creek Ferry, across the Hawkesbury River in Wisemans Ferry
- Wisemans Ferry, across the Hawkesbury River in Wisemans Ferry
- Wymah Ferry, across the Murray River between New South Wales and Victoria
