The Newell Highway is a trunk road through the center of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects the Leichhardt Highway , the Barwon Highway and the Cunningham Highway in Goondiwindi on the Queensland border with the Goulburn Valley Highway in Tocumwal on the Victoria border . The Newell Highway is the longest highway in New South Wales at 1,050 km and runs parallel to the coast about 400 km inland. This makes it an important interstate road connection that bypasses the densely populated coastal areas on a large scale.

course

The Newell Highway begins in Goondiwindi on the Macintyre River , a small town on the border between New South Wales and Queensland. There it is considered a continuation of the Leichhardt Highway (NA39 / A5), which leads from the north to Goondiwindi. Immediately after crossing the border, the Bruxner Highway (R44) branches off to the southeast in Boggabilla .

After about 130 km south of the Newell Highway reaches the town of Moree , where it crosses the Gwydir Highway (R38). Moree is the center of the cotton industry in northern New South Wales. Moree is also known for its thermal springs , which are said to have healing properties.

About 100 km further south on the Newell Highway is the city of Narrabri . The Kamilaroi Highway (R37) crosses there . Mount Kaputar National Park and the CSIRO Australia Telescope are in close proximity to Narrabri . This is a radio telescope consisting of six parabolic antennas , each 22 m in diameter.

Another 120 km to the southwest, the Newell Highway reaches the small town of Coonabarabran . Coming from Port Macquarie on the east coast, the Oxley Highway (R34) meets the Newell Highway. Both run together for the next 95 kilometers to Gilgandra . In Gilgandra, the Castlereagh Highway (R55) meets the two highways from the north, the Oxley Highway branches off to the west and the Newell Highway continues south to Dubbo .

Several highways meet in Dubbo. The Mitchell Highway (R32) crosses from southeast to northwest and the Golden Highway (S84) meets the Newell Highway when coming from the east.

If you follow the Newell Highway further south, you will reach the city of Parkes after 120 km . Parkes is on the transcontinental railroad and is a stop on the Indian Pacific . The Parkes Observatory outside the city is also known. This radio telescope was used by NASA as a base in the southern hemisphere during the Apollo missions. This role was also filmed in the feature film The Dish .

The Newell Highway continues through Forbes , Marsden and West Wyalong to the southwest . Between the latter two places, the road is used by the Newell Highway and the Mid-Western Highway (R24). The latter leads from Bathurst to Hay . West Wyalong is primarily known as a site for the production of eucalyptus oil .

Narrandera is the nearest major town on the Newell Highway, about 140 km southwest of West Wyalong. In Narrandera the Sturt Highway (N20) crosses in a west-east direction. The city is known as the center of an agriculturally very productive area that was created by extensive artificial irrigation. Today, in addition to traditional grain cultivation and sheep breeding, citrus fruits and wine are also successfully grown.

Other places along the Newell Highway are Jerilderie and Finley , where the Riverina Highway (R58) crosses. In Tocumwal the Newell Highway reaches the border with Victoria and with it its end. In Victoria, the Newell Highway finds its continuation in the Goulburn Valley Highway (NA39), which in connection with the Hume Highway (N31) leads to Melbourne .
