The Goulburn Valley Highway is a trunk road in the north and in the middle of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects the Newell Highway in Tocumwal on the Murray River with the small town of Eildon on the lake of the same name along the Goulburn River , one of the largest tributaries of the Murray River. From Tocumwal to Seymour , the road is part of the National Highway from Brisbane to Melbourne and is number NA 39.

From Tocumwal, the two-lane road runs south-southeast across the Murray River and the New South Wales- Victoria border . After 15 km it turns sharply to the west and leads together with the Murray Valley Highway (B400) to just beyond Strathmerton . There it turns sharply south and leads straight through Numurkah to Shepparton . From Shepparton, the Goulburn Highway leads in a gentle S-curve to the south-southwest via Nagambie to the Hume Highway (M31) north of Seymour. The road is also two-lane on this section of the route, but has longer three to four-lane sections.

From the junction with the Hume Highway the road runs through Seymour and then to the southeast, always upstream, to Yea . There she meets on the Melba Highway / Maroondah Highway (B300), with which she runs northeast to Cathkin . From there the Goulburn Valley Highway follows the river in an arc to the southeast to Alexandra and further, turning northeast, the last 16 miles to Eildon. The highway ends there and turns into Eildon Road .

Highway expansion

The Goulburn Valley Highway is classified as the Road of National Importance (RONI). This means that the Commonwealth of Australia will pay for all expansion costs. The road is to be gradually upgraded to motorway standard, so that all cities north of the Hume Freeway should have a bypass.

Bypasses

Arcadia

Work on the 11 km long bypass for the town south of Shepparton began in July 2006. It has now been opened to traffic.

Nagambie

Construction work on the 17-kilometer Nagambie bypass began in December 2009. In May 2013, the road was completed and opened to traffic.

Shepparton

The route of this bypass has already been determined, but there is still no information about the start of construction.

Strathmerton
