Heathcote

Heathcote is a city in central Victoria , located on the Northern Highway 110 km north of Melbourne and 40 km southeast of Bendigo . It can be approached from the McIvor Highway . In 2016, Heathcote had 1716 residents.

history

The first European known to have come to the area was Thomas Livingstone Mitchell in 1836. In 1851, about 400 Europeans lived there, including 16 settlers.

The Pink Cliffs Reserves are reminiscent of the Heathcote Gold Rush.

In late 1852, gold was found at McIvor Creek. About 40,000 prospectors camped in the area within six months. It was one of the richest gold finds during the Australian gold rush . The gold was found easily and quickly raised, and by the end of the year most of the prospectors had migrated to other locations, although gold had continued to be found at lower elevations for years. This was prior to the time the city was founded by the Victoria government, which ordered the construction of buildings. The post office opened on July 1, 1853 under the place name McIvor Creek, but was renamed Heathcote six months later, on January 1, 1854.

After the decline in gold mining, the region developed into an important agricultural area.

Heathcote was on the railroad from 1889 to 1968.

The most spectacular incident during the Heathcote gold rush was the attack on a private gold transport by the bush ranger John Francis on July 20, 1853. This happened near the spot where later, on January 31, 1945, a Stinson Aircraft plane crashed , whereby ten people were killed.

present

Golf can be played on the course at Heathcote Golf Club at Recreation Reserve.
