The town hall of Bendigo
Bendigo is the fourth largest city in Victoria with a population of 92,000.
history
Bendigo was founded in 1855. The place is a result of the gold rush that broke out in 1851 with the first gold discoveries in the area. Henry Koch became one of the richest people in Australia at that time. Thousands of prospectors arrived within a very short time and by 1870 the city, which was called Sandhurst until 1891, was the most important gold deposit in the world. More than 600 tons of gold had been mined there by 1950, then the increasingly difficult mining conditions caused the yield to decline. It is hoped that new methods will also be able to access the remaining gold reserves in the future, which should have the same size again.
The wealth created by gold is reflected in the city. Numerous large colonial-style buildings shape the cityscape. Accordingly, tourism is an important source of income for the city. One attraction is the "Talking Tram", the historic city tram.
