Sarah McKenzie (* 1987 in Bendigo , Victoria ) is an Australian jazz musician ( vocals , piano , composition ).

Life

McKenzie, who grew up in Melbourne , was introduced to jazz by an open-minded piano teacher. The first songs were written when he was 16. From 2007 to 2009 she studied at the West Austrialian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth . During her studies she began to compose music seriously; she also belonged to the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra . With the band Effigy of Now she recorded the album Whatever Fancies Your Tickle .

After graduation, McKenzie went back to Melbourne and put together a band. As a result, she performed at the important festivals in Australia, the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival and the Melbourne Women in Jazz Festival with musicians such as James Morrison , Graeme Lyall, Joe Chindamo, Mat Jodrell and Jamie Oehlers. As a background singer, she toured with Michael Bublé . As a solo act she opened shows by John Patitucci and Enrico Rava .

McKenzie signed a contract with ABC Music in 2010 . Her debut album Don't Tempt Me was released there in 2011 . Her second album Close Your Eyes was released the following year. Through a performance at the Umbria Jazz Festival , she won one of the few full scholarships from the Berklee College of Music and then studied for 1½ years until 2014 with Joanne Brackeen in Boston. After graduating, she will initially stay in the United States. In 2014 she performed with her quintet at the Monterey Jazz Festival . In 2015 she played at the Jazz Fest Wien .

After a contract change to Jean-Philippe Allard from the Impulse label ! Her third album We Could Be Lovers was released in 2015 . The album Paris in the Rain followed in 2017 . She lived in Paris between 2015 and the summer of 2018, before moving to New York. In the meantime (2019) she lives in London . According to her tour dates, she is often on the road worldwide, from appearances in Canada, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden to her first arrival in China. She has been booked for twelve days in a row at Lincoln Center Shanghai , during which she gives a concert every day. The three years in France have had the effect that she continues to appear more often in clubs and jazz festivals than anywhere else in Europe. The lessons with the French composer and arranger Michel Legrand , who died in 2019, also had a noticeable impact on McKenzie's style.

On March 29, 2019, the album Secrets of my Heart was released, the twelve tracks of which are mostly songs by the singer-songwriter and pianist. Two of the pieces document her love for the Brazilian musical tradition. Recorded in New York City, the album was recorded with bassist Pierre Boussaguet , percussionist Rogerio Bocatto , guitarist Dan Wilson , drummer Donald Edwards , vibraphonist Warren Wolf , tenor saxophonist Troy Roberts and cellist Jody Redhage Ferber .
