Kerang is a rural community on the Loddon River in northern Victoria , Australia .

Kerang is the economic center of an irrigated district with cattle breeding, gardens and the cultivation of grain and alfalfa . It is located 279 kilometers northwest of Melbourne on the Murray Valley Highway a few kilometers north of the junction with the Loddon Valley Highway at an altitude of 78 meters. At the 2016 census, Kerang had 3,633 residents. Kerang Airport (IATA: KRA, ICAO: YKER) is located in the south of the village .

Kerang's symbol is a flying ibis . The area around Kerang has numerous lakes and is considered one of the most populous ibis colonies in the world with an estimated 200,000 ibis that breed here every year along with many other water birds. It's also a popular recreational destination.

The name Kerang is believed to be derived from the indigenous Australian word for cockatoo .

history

The Wemba-Wemba are said to have been the indigenous people of the area. Thomas Livingstone Mitchell was the first European in 1836. The first settlers settled in 1845 and 1848. Richard Beyes opened a pub at a ford of the river near the future parish. A saddlery and a church followed. In 1857 Woodford Patchell built a bridge above the village, which diverted traffic from the earlier settlement. He opened a shop and a hotel in the future center of Kerang. Patchell was the name of the first famer in the state who used irrigation and experimented with oats, barley, corn, millet, tobacco, sugar beets, cotton, and sugar cane. The post office opened on July 29, 1858. An office some distance away from Kerang was renamed Wedderburn that same day .

Kerang was declared a Shire in 1871 ; at that time it had 109 inhabitants. The arrival of the Bendigo Railway in 1884 and the construction of the Koondrook Tramway from Kerang to Koondrook in 1888 resulted in growth; by 1891 the population had risen to over a thousand. The expansion of irrigation improved productivity and allowed the place to continue to grow.

In spring 2010 and summer 2010/2011 Kerang was hit by particularly severe floods and temporarily completely enclosed by the water at the end of January.

Burke and Wills

The Burke and Wills expedition reached Kerang on their journey through Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria on Sunday September 2, 1860. The expedition camped at Booth & Holloway's Tragowell Station south of Kerang. On Tuesday September 4, 1860, she passed Kerang, crossed the Loddon, and camped at Mr. Fenton's Reedy Creek Run, the 13th camp since leaving Melbourne.
