The Goulburn River is a river in the Australian state of Victoria .
course
The source of the river is on the western edge of the Australian Alps on the eastern slopes of Mount Matlock at Woods Point . The upper course is dammed up to Lake Eildon , which is used for irrigation. Most of the river water at the Goulburn Weir near Nagambie and in the Waranga Basin , another reservoir, is diverted. Shortly before Echuca , the Goulburn River flows into the Murray River .
The plains of northern Victoria, through which the river flows between the Eildon and its mouth, are very fertile farmland, but they require irrigation.
Most of the river water is diverted for irrigation and the river itself is heavily regulated, which severely affects the ecosystem. With the last few years in Australia being some of the driest on record, this ecosystem has become even more stressed.
Because of these interventions in nature, there was a great dispute over the construction of the north-south pipeline, which is supposed to divert 70 million m³ of water annually into the drinking water supply of Melbourne . However, some people claim that all of the water to be sent to Melbourne would be saved by improving the irrigation systems in the Goulburn River basin.
In June 2008, the Murray-Darling Basin Commission presented a report on the condition of the Murray-Darling Basin , describing the Goulburn River and the Murrumbidgee River as being in very poor ecological condition. The fish stocks in both rivers are also believed to have been severely decimated.
