The Broken River is a river in the center of the Australian state of Victoria .

Surname
The name ( German Broken River ) probably goes back to the fact that the river only consists of a series of water holes in dry times. When the water level is high, however, the Broken River is one of the fastest flowing rivers in Australia.
The city of Benalla on the river was called Broken River after it was founded until the 1850s .
