The Hume Highway is one of Australia's major and busiest trunk roads. It is part of the Australian National Highway Network and extends over 880 km between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne . The Hume Highway is very important for freight traffic between these major cities, while the Princes Highway along the coast is a popular alternative route for tourists .

In the first decades after British settlers began to settle Australia, little explored the hinterland. The main reason was the Great Dividing Range , which at the time was an almost insurmountable obstacle. It was not until 1818 that a path across the Great Dividing Range was found that led from Sydney to what is now Goulburn .

In 1824 it was the explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell who undertook a voyage of discovery and research from Campbelltown to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne's natural harbor. The Hume and Hovell expedition contributed significantly to the development and settlement of the hinterland. The course of today's Hume Highway essentially corresponds to the route that the two explorers took at the time.

The first road, which initially only led to Goulburn, was then known as the Great South Road. The first extensive construction work was carried out in 1833 and it took until the 1860s for the entire route to be completed as a continuous road for the first time. This street was still called the Great South Road in New South Wales . In Victoria it was known as Sydney Road. It was not until 1928 that the entire route was renamed Hume Highway in honor of the explorer Hamilton Hume.

Today, the Hume Highway is largely declared a freeway and, apart from a few kilometers, has been expanded to four lanes over almost its entire length.

The Hume Highway begins at the junction of the WestLink (M7) with the South Western Motorway (Met-5) in the southern Casula suburb of Sydney . It leads south through Campbelltown to Mittagong . There it turns to the southwest and from the town of Goulburn to the west. Behind Goulburn, the Federal Highway (N23) branches off to the southwest and shortly before Yass the Barton Highway (N25) to the south-southeast. Both highways lead to Canberra , the Australian capital. In Jugiong the Hume Highway turns again to the southwest and runs through the Riverina southeast of Wagga Wagga until it reaches the Murray River in Albury and thus the border to Victoria .

Victoria

On the south bank of the Murray River, the Hume Highway, which is called Hume Freeway from there , runs through the city of Wodonga and continues through rich farmland to the southwest. After Wangaratta on the Ovens River and Benalla , he reached the town of Seymour on the Goulburn River , where he turned south. After another 70 km, the Western Ring Road (NM80) in Melbourne is reached.

Since the completion of the Hume Highway expansion in 2013, all places along the highway have been bypassed .
