Cooma

Cooma is a city in southern New South Wales in Australia . It is located 115 km south of the capital Canberra on the Murrumbidgee River and 397 km southwest of Sydney . Cooma is considered the gateway to the Snowy Mountains and can be reached via the Monaro Highway and the Snowy Mountains Highway . The name Cooma comes from the Aborigines and means big lake (large lake) or open country (open country).

Cooma was named a city in 1879. Cooma was accessible by rail from Sydney from 1889. This railway line was closed in 1986. In 1949 the company Snowy Mountains System settled down, creating jobs and Cooma grew continuously.

Cooma is often visited by winter sports tourists heading to the Snowy Mountains during the winter months.

Locality

There is a secondary school in Cooma, Monaro High School and several elementary schools, several radio stations and two newspapers. Cooma has one airport, Cooma - Snowy Mountains Airport , which is 15 kilometers away. Cooma can be reached by buses from Canberra and the Bega Valley.
