The Monaro Highway is a trunk road in the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria , as well as in the Australian Capital Territory . It connects Majura Road at Canberra Airport in the Australian Capital Territory with the Princes Highway in Cann River , Victoria.

history

The street is named after the Monaro region through which it runs. The section in Victoria was called Cann Valley Highway before it was fortified and was then declared part of the Monaro Highway.

course

The Monaro Highway begins in the eastern part of the Australian capital Canberra near the airport. There Majura Road (R23) coming from the north meets Fairbairn Avenue from the northwest. The Monaro Highway continues south from there and crosses the Molonglo River . The Kings Highway (R52) branches off to the southwest between the suburbs of Fyshwick and Symonston . The Monaro Highway follows the border between the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales to the south and crosses it south of Williamsdale . It follows the upper reaches of the Murrumbidgee River to Cooma , where the Snowy Mountains Highway (R18) branches off to the northwest. Together with him, the Monaro Highway continues on its way south-southeast and crosses the ridge of the Great Dividing Range at Nimmitabel . Approx. 16 km further south, the Snowy Mountains Highway branches off to the east in the direction of Bega , while the Monaro Highway leads south to the city of Bombala .

From Bombala the trunk road continues south and after about 36 km crosses the border to Victoria. There it forms the western border of the South East Forest National Park and the south adjoining Coopracambra National Park . In Cann River on the river of the same name, the Monaro Highway joins the Princes Highway (A1) and ends.

Meaning and numbering

The Monaro Highway is around 200 km long and forms part of the connection between Sydney and the Snowy Mountains . In the New South Wales area, the road was given number 23 on the National Highway System. The state of Victoria introduced the new alphanumeric system in the late 1990s; there the street bears the designation B23.
