The Molonglo River is a river in eastern Australia .

It rises in the state of New South Wales north of Captain's Flat on the Great Dividing Range , flows first to the north, later to the northwest. In the city of Queanbeyan it takes the Queanbeyan River , its main tributary, and then flows through the Australian capital Canberra . There the river was dammed to Lake Burley Griffin . Northwest of Canberra it flows into the Murrumbidgee River , a tributary of the Murray River .

history

The river was named after the Aboriginal tribe of the Moolinggolah . During the early European settlement phase, the Molonglo River and the Queanbeyan River were known together as the "Fish River" due to their abundance of fish. But in 1939 and 1942 the water was contaminated twice by ore residues from the mines in Captain's Flat, so that the entire stock of fish and aquatic plants was destroyed. When Lake Burley Griffin was dammed in 1963, there was not a single fish in the entire river. It was not until 1976 that the release of individual fish species began.
