Coordinates: 36 ° 14 ' S , 149 ° 7' O Cooma-Monaro Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 5,229 km² and last had about 9,800 inhabitants. In 2016, the newly created Snowy Monaro Regional Council took off.
Cooma-Monaro was located in the southeast of the state and encloses the southern half of the Australian Capital Territory around the capital Canberra . The distance to the metropolis Sydney was about 400 km. The area comprised 67 hamlets and hamlets, including Bredbo, Countegany, Jerangle, Nimmitable, Numeralla, Peak View, Rock Flat, Shannons Flat, Yaouk and parts of Cooma and Michelago. The headquarters of the Shire Council was in Cooma, which now has about 6,400 residents.

The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council had nine members who were elected by LGA residents. Cooma-Monaro was not divided into districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
