The Illawarra Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects the Hume Highway in Sutton Forest with the Princes Highway in Albion Park ( Wollongong ). This connecting road was numbered as R48.
Origin of name
The road was named after the region it runs through, the Illawarra .
course
The road branches off west of Sutton Forest from the Hume Highway (N31) to the east. It leads through the town of Moss Vale to the Macquarie Pass , which it overcomes steeply and with many hairpin bends. The Illawarra Highway is unsuitable for heavy traffic. On the pass is the most southern subtropical rainforest in Australia.
Eventually the highway ends on Princes Highway (R1) in Albion Park, south of Wollongong.
Typical for the route are the nearby national parks, such as the Macquarie Pass National Park , Morton National Park and Budderoo National Park , as well as the small country towns with intact buildings from the 19th century, such as Moss Vale and Robertson .
