The Macquarie Pass National Park is a national park in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales , about 10 km west of Wollongong and about 90 km south of Sydney . This is the area around the pass of the same name along the Illawarra Highway .

The national park was established in 1970 and protects various species of eucalyptus and rainforest . The pass was opened in 1898. It always was and still is the most important point of access to the coastal plain of Illawarra . An important power line runs through the park in an east-west direction. There are two picnic areas at the top of the pass.

In addition to various bird species, you can watch swamp wallabies and wombats in the park.

Hiking trails

  • The Macquarie Rivulet Track is 2 km long and has an easy to medium difficulty level. The new path leads 30 m to a parking lot at the picnic area by the stream. An older path leads along the northern bank of the stream. It is quite flat for several hundred meters, then becomes a little steeper and then leads over a large boulder back down to the stream. You can find a number of bird species here (Dollarbird, Azure Kingfisher, Sacred Kingfisher, Golden Whistler, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, Black-faced Monarch and Rufous Fantail).
  • The Cascade Falls Walk is an easy 1 km walk. It leads along Cascade Creek down Macquarie Pass to a small waterfall. Here you can also observe a number of birds (Green Catbird, Rose Robin, Red-browed Finch, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, Brown Gerygone, Lewin's Honeyeater and Crimson Rosella). You can also find mushrooms here.
  • The Clover Hill Road is a 3.5 km long, easy path. It follows a service road to Macquarie Rivulet and features several waterfalls and a large boulder. The path ends in a parking lot after 3 km. Then he splits up at Turpentine Grove. The boulder is about 50 m high and the waterfall is behind it. Here, too, there are a number of bird species to be seen (White-throated Treecreeper, Large-billed Gerygone, Bassian Thrush, Topknot Pigeon, Brown Cuckoo-Dove, Wonga-Pigeon, King Parrot, Gray Goshawk and Levin's Honeyeater). At night you can also find different species of owl (Powerful Owl, Sooty Owl).
  • The Glenview Walk is 2 km long and easy. It leads through high forest under the power lines to the east, where it leaves the park area. There are also a number of bird species here (Variegated Fairy-wren, Brush Cuckoo, Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Crested Shrike-tit and Golden Bronze-cuckoo).
  • The Upper Cascade Creek Walk is 2 km long and moderately difficult.
  • The Brown Barrel Walk is an easy to moderately difficult trail that is 500 m long and leads from Nurrewin under the power lines through rainforest and damp eucalyptus forest. Bird species: Superb Lyrebird, Pilotbird, Cicadabird, Logrunner, Rose Robin, Golden Whistler, King Parrot and Topknot Pigeon. The name of the hiking trail is derived from a type of eucalyptus, the brown barrel (Eucalyptus fastigata).
  • The Mount Murray Road Track is an easy 1.5 km trail. It follows the lane of the power line in a loop. Bird species: Red-browed Treecreeper, Satin Flycatcher, Black-faced Monarch and Rufous Fantails, seen from late spring through autumn.
