The Wollumbin National Park is located in the state of New South Wales of Australia , about 870 km north of Sydney on the border with Queensland . It covers an area of 4117 hectares and also includes the former Mount Warning National Park . These two parks were merged in 2009.
General
Mount Warning is part of the remains of a shield volcano that was spared from erosion , which also forms the Tweed Valley , among other things . From here you have an impressive view from the 1156 m high summit of the mountain. In the language of the Aborigines , the mountain is called Wollumbin , which means "cloud maker".
nature
On the lower slopes one encounters subtropical rainforest with nettle trees , Moreton Bay eucalyptus and figs, in the higher regions cork wood, water rubber trees and mountain forest nuts. Heathland exists on the summit .
It is difficult to observe mammals in the rainforest. You are most likely to meet red-necked filander , a species of kangaroo, but also different species of bats and the koala . Notable species of birds are the purple-breasted pigeon , black lily tail , rust-bellied thicket bird and marble swallow .
Further protection categories
In 1986 the national park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Australia's Gondwana Rainforests . Other national parks such as the Border Ranges National Park and Nightcap National Park are nearby .
tourism
There are no overnight accommodations in the national park itself, only a rest area. Since the Aborigines consider the mountain a sanctuary, caution is advised when climbing the mountain.
