The Dooragan National Park is a national park in north-eastern Australian state of New South Wales , 365 kilometers north-east of Sydney near the small town of Laurieton .

Three Brothers

The local Aboriginal tribes tell each other a legend of three brothers from the Birpai tribe , who were killed by a witch named Widjirriejuggi and buried at the places where the mountains named after them stand today. The youngest of the three was called Dooragan ; the park was named after him.

Strangely enough, Captain Cook , who passed this point along the coast on May 12, 1770, also named the mountains Three Brothers , because they looked so similar. Cook had already described the Three Brothers west of Cape St. Diego on January 25, 1769 . Perhaps they inspired him to use this name.

The middle brother is located southwest of the Dooragan National Park and is surrounded by its own national park .

The northern brother (Dooragan) is covered in a variety of vegetation communities - including some of the best examples of old blackbutt - eucalyptus trees in the area and some patches of subtropical rainforest . These forests provide the habitat for glidoteers , bats and koalas . One problem in the national park is the spread of introduced convertible florets .

The area of the mountain was declared a source of wood in 1892 and later named Camden State Forest . Parts of the mountain were cut down, but large areas remained untouched because of their poor accessibility. In 1970 the site was opened to the public and a road was built to the top. The steep, winding road has recently been paved but is not accessible to motorhomes and trailers. Viewing platforms, which are also prepared for use with wheelchairs, provide interesting views along the coast. There are picnic areas and toilets. There are also hiking trails of different lengths and levels of difficulty.
