General

The national park was placed under protection in June 1979. The area of the protected area covers approx. 31,729 hectares. The park offers tourist offers such as hiking trails, rest areas and camping sites. However, traveling in the park is very demanding and requires good preparation and appropriate equipment.

nature

The area is located on the floor of an extinct basalt volcano, the Tweed Volcano . Today there is still a grandiose view over Mount Warning and the Tweed Valley . You can find pristine rainforest here . A special feature is the occurrence of the southern beech , which reaches its northern limit of distribution here, and the rare but conspicuous beech orchid , which blooms with a strong scent in spring.

It is difficult to observe mammals in the rainforest. You are most likely to meet possums and glide bags or find the tracks of the beaked hedgehog . The occurrence of the brown-backed lyre-tail and the southern frog species Assa darlingtoni is remarkable .

Further protection categories

In 1987 the national park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Australia's Gondwana Rainforests . There are other national parks nearby such as Wollumbin National Park and Nightcap National Park .
