Map of the Tiffin River within the Maumee River basin. |
The Tiffin River is a 121 km long left tributary of the Maumee River in southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio .
It mainly drains the agricultural area that lies in the catchment area of Lake Erie . The upper reaches of the river in Michigan and Ohio north of Burlington were also called Bean Creek for a time. Other names of the Tiffin River are Tiffin Creek and Little River .
The Tiffin River rises in southeast Michigan on the border of the two counties Hillsdale and Lenawee , about 19 km east of the city of Hillsdale . It first flows south until it reaches northwestern Ohio, now swings southwest and crosses western Fulton County and Goll Woods State Nature Preserve . This is a remnant of the Great Black Swamp with oaks up to 400 years old, which formerly covered the entire area southwest of Lake Erie. From the village of Stryker, the Tiffin River meanders in a southerly direction and reaches the Maumee River about 3 km west of the city of Defiance .
