The Hunter Wetlands National Park is a national park in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales , nine kilometers north of Newcastle .

The park includes riverside areas in the Hunter River estuary , both on the southern and northern branches. The west coast of Fullerton Cove is also part of the park. The Kooragang Swamp Reserve and the Hexham Swamp Reserve , former state sanctuaries , went into the national park on the northern outskirts of Newcastle, as did Stockton sand grit and part of Ash Island. The wetlands provide shelter for migratory birds and native waterfowl.

Popular recreational activities include bird watching near Stockton Bridge and visiting the Kooragang Wetlands on Ash Island, where a mangrove swamp can be viewed from safe piers .
