The Nightcap National Park (English Nightcap National Park) is located in the state of New South Wales of Australia , about 35 km north of Lismore and 30 km from the coast near the border with Queensland . It has an area of 8081 ha.

Other national parks such as Broadwater National Park , Border Ranges National Park and Wollumbin National Park are nearby .

General

The national park is located in the basin of the former Mount Warning volcano . One of the most valuable rainforest stands in the state has developed here, and there have been years of disputes with the loggers to protect it. Nightcap National Park has the highest annual rainfall in New South Wales. The highest amount of precipitation recorded in one day is 430.5 mm.

Flora and fauna

A variety of remarkable animal and plant species can be found in the national park. Among them is the tree species Eidothea hardeniana , which was not scientifically described until 2000 and has only been found in one place in this national park worldwide. The population only includes around 100 plants capable of reproduction, which is why the species is considered critically endangered.

Bird species include, for example, the rust-bellied thicket bird , the white-eared monarch and the marble swallow . Endangered bird species that find habitat in smaller parts of the area are the fox shark , the masked barn owl and the black owl . The mammals are represented in larger populations with the giant bag marten and the parmawallaby .

In drier forest areas you can also find koalas , large flying squirrel hives and the red rat kangaroo .

tourism

There are a few resting places in the national park. The area is accessed by various hiking trails that lead to viewpoints and the Protestor waterfall . The "Nightcap Track" partly follows the original route that was used at the beginning of the 20th century to transport mail on horseback.
