The 308.66 km² Toorale National Park (English: Toorale National Park ) is located about 80 kilometers southwest of Bourke in northwest New South Wales , Australia . The 543.85 km² Toorale State Conservation Area adjoins the national park to the northwest . The national park can be reached via the Toorale Road . Not far southeast of the Toorale National Park is the Gundabooka National Park .

landscape

The Darling River meanders through the national park , creating large seasonal floodplains that then dry out again. In the national park the Warrego River flows into the Darling River.

One of the largest flocks of sheep in the world used to graze in the area of ​​the national park. A holdover from that time is the Toorale Homestead , a sheep breeding station established in 1857 and bought by the state in 2008.

Flora and fauna

Red eucalyptus trees grow on the banks of the Darling River . Eucalyptus populnea trees grow in seasonally flooded areas.

Casuarina , soap tree and diamond plants have spread in the arid regions . Soap tree plants grow on the stony surfaces in the park, and there are also small areas of buckthorn plants . In the west of the park there are forests with buckthorn plants and there are trees of the Eucalyptus intertexta .

216 native animals were counted. Among them there are 15 endangered bird species such as Wammentrappe , Kläfferkauz , blue-billed duck , Grauseitenschnäbler , Rußbauchsäbler , Australia-booted eagle , Australian Greater Painted-Snipe , Inca Cockatoo , Black Cockatoo , sand Skitterer , Spotted Harrier , White Face Gibberbird , little pied cormorant and the bat saccolaimus flaviventris .

Migratory birds also rest in the national park. In the wetlands around the Darling and Warrego Rivers estuaries, ibises , pelicans and brolgas are observed. There are also the so-called Murray River Turtles (Emydura macquarii).

tourism

Park visitors usually come to watch birds. A hiking trail starts near Toorale Station and there is a lookout point, a shaded area for picnics and a campsite. There are several hiking trails in the park. The national park can be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles on the 41-kilometer Darling River Drive .

Aboriginal

The national park is a traditional ancestral territory of the Aborigines of Kurnu-Baakandji. The area west of the Waregoo River is administered by a Local Aboriginal Council . There are more than 500 historical sites of importance to the Aborigines. These are trees, quarries, worked stones, burial ritual artefacts, storage areas with fireplaces and clusters of clams and snails .
