The Mummel Gulf National Park is located in the New England Tableland of New South Wales , Australia about 300 km as the crow flies north of Sydney and 50 km southeast of Walcha . It was founded in 1999 and is 14,127 hectares in size.

General

The landscape in the park is shaped by the existence of primary forest , whereby the terrain here drops from about 1450 meters to about 470 meters above sea level. These forest stands were the subject of protests against the continued logging at the beginning of the 1990s, which were counteracted by placing them under protection. The forests are partly subtropical rainforests, partly eucalyptus forests of various compositions.

nature

A number of threatened animal and plant species are preserved through the protection. On rare mammals u. a. Pouch marten , wombat , parmawallaby , yellow-bellied glider and giant glider were found, in rare birds the giant owl ( Ninox strictua ), the black owl , the boobook owl , owl dovetail and cave dovetail .

Hazards

Since feral pigs and dogs endanger the animal species living here, the employees of the national park administration endeavor to reduce their populations through control measures. In addition, the spread of undesirable plant species such as Ageratina adenophora and blackberries , which were based on previous uses of the area, are problematic.
