The Arakwal National Park is a national park in the northwest of the Australian state of New South Wales , 624 kilometers north of Sydney and two kilometers south of Cape Byron , the most easterly point of Australia. The closest town is Byron Bay . The park protects a walled area, a humid heathland behind Tallow Beach , which is home to many species of birds and two native species of frogs , Crinia tinnula and Litoria olongburensis , which are threatened with extinction .
Originally, Aborigines from the arakwal tribe lived here . The area was declared a national park in 2001 after a lease agreement was reached with the arakwal. The Aborigines help manage the park.
