The monarchs (Monarchidae) are a family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes).

Monarchs are common in Africa , sub-Saharan Africa , Madagascar , Australia , Tasmania , New Guinea , South Asia, and Polynesia . Many species have a hood. On their flat beaks, a kind of basket for insects is formed by strong bristles on each side of the base of the beak.
