The Eiao spot monarch ( Pomarea fluxa ) is an extinct species of bird from the monarch family . It was endemic to Eiao Island in the Marquesas . Until 2004 it was considered a subspecies of the Iphis flycatcher ( Pomarea iphis ).

description

The Eiao spot monarch reached a length of 170 millimeters, the wing length was 79 to 86 millimeters, the tail length 69 to 77 millimeters, the beak ridge measured 14.5 to 16 millimeters, the beak length from the nostril 10 to 10.8 millimeters, and the The barrel was 26 to 27 millimeters long. In the adult male, the head, neck, chest and the upper and lower tail-coverts were black with a slight iridescence. The wings, including the quills and wing covers, were soot-black. The central control springs were soot-black and somewhat shiny. The back, shoulders, rump, chest, stomach, and flanks were speckled in black and white. The iris was brown. The beak was black and bluish at the base of the lower jaw. The feet and legs were black. In the adult female, the crown of the head and the nape of the neck were olive brown with a few flecked feathers on the forehead, the crown of the head and around the eye. The shoulders, the rump and the upper tail covers were cinnamon brown. The wings were olive brown with white tips. The back was light cinnamon brown. The chest and throat were heavily speckled.

habitat

The species inhabited bushland as well as subtropical and tropical dry and wet forests in the lowlands of the island of Eiao.

Much of the original lowland dry forest on Eiao has been destroyed by overgrazing. Introduced cats and rats stalked the monarchs. The naturalization of the brown-breasted reed finch ( Munia castaneothorax ) also introduced bird diseases on Eiao. In 1977 the Eiao spot monarch was recorded for the last time.
