Mittagong is a small town with a population of around 6,000 , located near the coast, around 130 km south of the state capital Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales . Administratively, Mittagong is part of the Wingecarribee Shire , which includes the scenic region of Southern Highlands .

Mittagong Railway Station

The city, located at the foot of the 863 m high Mount Gibraltar, is connected to the transport network by the Hume Highway leading from Sydney to Melbourne and rail connections. Buses run regularly to Moss Vale , the capital of the Shire, and other surrounding towns.

A bypass road was established for the busy highway in the 1990s, which significantly increased the quality of life in the city and also made it more attractive to tourism.

William Chalker (1775–1823), who was shipped from England to Australia as a convict, became the first permanent settler in the Mittagong area after his release. He settled here in 1821 and became a police overseer over government property, primarily cattle. Iron ore was discovered in 1830. In 1848 the Fitz Roy Iron works were opened, which processed the ore into iron until 1890. This represents the first iron ore exploitation in Australia.

These days, Mittagong mainly serves as a shopping center for the surrounding area with a few branches of national chains. The place also has some reputable antique shops. A reputable winegrowing company has established itself around the place since 1980.

Old Tooth and Co. Malt House

The ruins of the more than 100 year old malt house of the local branch of the Tooth and Co. brewery, which was once important in New South Wales , bear witness to a bygone industrial culture. A later attempt to restore the building, which had been abandoned in 1981, was immediately discarded.

The girls' boarding school at Frensham is highly regarded and was also attended by local born Lucy Turnbull , née Hughes, in 1958 . Turnbull married the later Federal Minister Malcolm Turnbull and was elected Lord Mayor of Sydney in 2003 as the first woman.

The cricketer Sir Donald Bradman , hero of Australian sports history, scored his first Century here at the age of 12 in a game against the local school and even settled in 1962 for a few years.
