The Wombeyan Caves Road is a connecting road in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects the Old Hume Highway in Mittagong with the Goulburn-Oberon Road in Richlands . The street is shown as Hauptstraße 258 .

course

From the Old Hume Highway in Mittagong, the Wombeyan Caves Road branches off to the northwest near the junction with the Hume Highway (N31). It leads through farmland to the community of High Range as a paved, two-lane road. Soon after High Range the road turns west-northwest and the asphalt surface ends. West of Bullio it crosses the Wollondilly River and then leads to the Wombeyan Caves at the southern tip of the Blue Mountains National Park and the place of the same name. On this route, the quality of the road decreases the further it goes west.

To the west of the campsite there, Wombeyan Caves Road climbs steeply and curvy up a hill. This ramp is reattached. As soon as the highest point is reached, the road turns into a gravel road again, but it is wider and does not have as many curves. It soon turns south-west and after about 15 km reaches Goulburn-Oberon Road in Richlands. Shortly at its end in Richlands, the road is paved again.

Sandstone tunnel

In its eastern part, west of High Range , the road runs through a historic, single-lane tunnel cut into the sandstone. The tunnel is about 22 m long at its base, but has a sandstone overhang on the west side that extends several meters further.

A plaque at the eastern tunnel entrance reads:

"This tunnel was completed during 1899 as part of a new tourist road linking the southern highlands to Wombeyan Caves. Officially opened on 29 January 1900, the road was originally named Duprez Road in honor of Adolphe Prosper Duprez of Bowral who was the driving force behind its construction. " (Eng .: This tunnel was completed in 1899 as part of a new tourist route from the southern highlands to the Wombeyan Caves. The road opened on January 29, 1900 was originally called Duprez Road in honor of Adolphe Prosper Duprez from Bowral, who built the road driven forward with vigor.)

Road conditions

Because of the extremely poor road conditions several kilometers east of the campsite at the Wombeyan Caves, it is strongly recommended that you enter these caves from Goulburn-Oberon Road (from the west). Despite the possible opposite representation in some road maps, the unpaved section of the road should only be driven on with all-wheel drive vehicles and with sufficient time allowed.
