The Goulburn-Oberon Road is a connecting road in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . The road connects the Hume Highway in Goulburn with O'Connell Road in Oberon . The road is designated as Main Route 256 and is seen as part of a future Sydney bypass .

course

The road branches off at Goulburn from the Hume Highway (N31) to the north. Via Taralga it leads to Richlands , where the Wombeyan Caves Road joins from the east . She continues to the Abercrombie River , which she crosses south of the Abercrombie River National Park . The road continues north along its southeastern border and finally reaches O'Connell Road in Oberon.

At its northern end, Goulburn-Oberon Road runs through impressive plantations of Monterey pines , which are processed into sawn timber in Oberon.

Road conditions

Extensive work was carried out on it from 2002 to 2008. The last unpaved stretch of road between Abercrombie River and the end of Wombeyan Caves Road was paved in February 2008. In 2007, the Upper Lachlan Shire received a grant from the New South Wales Government of AU $ 710,000 over three years to upgrade the road. The Local Government Area itself raised AU $ 1.42 million for this purpose. With the support of the municipality of Oberon, the work was completed in the first year.

Tourist importance

Together with O'Connell Road, Goulburn-Oberon Road forms a direct connection from Goulburn to Bathurst that is well worth seeing . The north ramp into the valley of the Abercrombie River offers particularly interesting views.
