Tallangatta

Tallangatta is a city in the northeast of the Australian state of Victoria . The city is located on the southern arm of Lake Hume , near the mouth of the Mitta Mitta River and about 40 km southeast of Wodonga . The Murray Valley Highway runs right past the city. At the 2016 census, Tallangatta had 935 residents.

history

Tallangatta was founded in the 1870s; the first post office opened on May 15, 1871.

After the railroad was built, the city served as a gateway to the Mitta Mitta River and upper Murray River valleys (as far as the Murray River is concerned, only until the railroad line extended to Cudgewa ). At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century there were a number of gold and tin mines in the city. Today, however - in contrast to neighboring Beechworth - you can hardly see that. Gold mining was initially profitable, but then it turned out that the deeper deposits contained other metals in addition to gold. The extraction processes were not yet developed in such a way that gold extraction would have been profitable under these circumstances.

Since then, Tallangatta has mainly been a center of agriculture. There was a butter factory there since the beginning of the 20th century. Improved road connections in the 1970s resulted in the closure of both the factory and the railway connection. Today Tangambalanga is the center of the dairy industry , approx. 15 km west of the city.

Perhaps the most interesting historical aspect is the shift of the city 5 miles to the west in the 1950s, which allowed Lake Hume to expand. On April 14, 1955, the Tallangatta post office was renamed 'Tallangatta East' and a new post office was opened in the newly built town.

The routes of the streets in Old Tallangatta are still clearly visible in Google Earth today .

economy

Cattle breeding is now the most important industry in the area. There is a small slaughterhouse in Tallangatta , the only manufacturing facility. The reservoir and the trunk road brought the city a limited number of tourists, especially motorcyclists, who enjoy the area's winding roads. There is a motel and a campground on the highway.

There is also a small hospital, two primary schools and one secondary school. Many residents commute to work in Albury or Wodonga. The beauty of the landscape and the recreational value of the reservoir compensate you for your half-hour commute.

Sports

Tallangatta owns an Australian football team that plays in the Tallangatta & District Football League .

Golfers can play at Tallangatta Golf Club on Coorilla Street .

Tallangatta Tomorrow Project

Tallangatta has undergone some significant changes over the past 60 years that have had a significant impact on the city and the community. The biggest change in recent years has been the retreat of the shoreline of the reservoir (due to lack of water). This led to a decline in tourism and fewer businesses and private individuals to settle here. The main street is relatively long for a city of this size and due to the retreat of business there are many buildings in need of renovation. However, there is also a plan to bring new life back to the city with a renovation concept.
