The Mitta Mitta River is a river in the north of the Australian state of Victoria and an important tributary of the Murray River , to which it feeds about 40% of its water volume.
The source is located south of the Alpine National Park on the Great Alpine Road , between Omeo and Anglers Rest at the confluence of the Big River and Cobungra River . From there, the river winds 204 kilometers north, where it joins the Murray River south of Albury .
Two large reservoirs, Lake Dartmouth on the upper reaches and Lake Hume on the lower reaches, hamper the course of the river. Above Lake Dartmouth, the river flows through a forest that can almost be described as primary forest . Below it winds through flat farmland (which is now irrigated with its water).
The natural confluence with the Murray River is now Lake Hume. The river valley used to be inundated annually, but the construction of the Dartmouth Dam in the 1970s prevented this reliably.
The Mitta Mitta River is considered good fishing water; you can find brown trout there and occasionally rainbow trout .
The towns of Dartmouth, Mitta Mitta, Eskdale and Tallangatta can be found in the Mitta Mitta River valley .
