The Cobungra River is a river in northern Gippsland in the east of the Australian state of Victoria .

course

It rises on the slopes of the ski area of Mount Hotham and Mount Loch and is a source river of the Mitta Mitta River , which it forms together with the Big River . The two source rivers meet at Anglers Rest on the Omeo Highway in the Alpine National Park .

Today's historic bridge on the Omeo Highway at Anglers Rest stands where a ford called Jack's Crossing used to cross the river. This ford was named after a foreman at the nearby Mount Wills sheep station who drowned when he tried to lead some pack horses across the river, which was in high water, in 1856 .

The Cobungra River is known as good fishing water for trout .
