The Coliban River is a river in the middle of the Australian state of Victoria . It serves to supply the cities and settlements in its vicinity with water.
River course
The source is near Lyonville on the Great Dividing Range . After a few kilometers, the river plunges 33 meters over Trentham Falls and flows through three reservoirs, the Upper Coliban Reservoir , the Lauriston Reservoir and the Malmsbury Reservoir . At the outlet of the latter is the small town of Malmsbury , from where the Coliban River continues its course north. It flows through the small town of Metcalfe and flows further north into Lake Eppalock and thus into the Campaspe River .
use
In 1858 gold was found in the river and its water was used to supply the gold rush towns of Bendigo and Castlemaine . With the population growth there, a better water supply was needed over time, and so 70 km of tunnels and aqueducts were built . Later on, Kyneton and many other small towns and settlements in the region were also connected to this water supply. Today it supplies more than 200,000 residents with drinking water.
fauna and Flora
In the river there are the platypus , as well as eight native fish species, including Macquaria australasica (Engl. Macquarie perch, "Macquariebarsch") from the family of temperate perch . Four of these fish species are threatened with extinction, with the species Maccullochella macquariensis (trout cod, "trout cod") belonging to the same family being particularly threatened and it is not known whether it can really still be found in the Coliban River. The native vegetation consists primarily of the eucalyptus species Eucalyptus aggregata (black gum), a tree that used to be found frequently, but is now rather rare due to long-term deforestation.
administration
Coliban Water operates the three riverside reservoirs that are part of the Eppalock Proclaimed Water Supply Catchment .
