The family of codfish (Percichthyidae) consists of about 25 species in ten genera. They live in Australia , Chile and Argentina ( Percichthys ) in fresh water, rarely in brackish water .

features

The animals have a typical perch shape with dorsal fins that have grown together and that can be separated by an incision. Their scales are comb scales , with simple needle-like spines, at the rear end or secondary round scales . The sideline is complete.

Codfish grow to be 6 centimeters to 1.8 meters long. Some species are threatened with extinction.

Genera and species

Guyu wujalwujalensis
Macquaria australasica
Nannoperca australis
Percichthys melanops
Percilia gillissi

The Asian genera Coreoperca and Siniperca , which used to belong to the cod perch , now form a separate family, the Sinipercidae . Since the cod perch, including the genus Percalates, are not monophyletic , it was proposed that they should be separated into a new family, "Percalatidae".

Fossil record

With Percichthys antiquus and Santosius antiquus from the Miocene of Taubaté (Brazil) and a representative of the genus Macquaria from the Eocene of Queensland the Percichthyidae are fossil represented.
