The perch ( Percilia ) are a genus of perch-related freshwater fish . They are found in rivers in southern and central Chile . The genus was previously placed in an independent family, the Perciliidae. However, it is phylogenetically deep in the family of codfish (Percichthyidae).

features

Southern perch grow to be nine centimeters long. They have two dorsal fins. The first is supported by nine to ten fin spines, the second by 12 to 14 soft rays. The anal fin has three spines and 11 to 13 soft rays. The soft radiating part of the dorsal and anal fin is scaled. There is a black spot on the base of the pectoral fins.

Percilia gillissi lays its eggs in the cavities of the freshwater sponge Spongilla igloviformis , which are guarded there by the male. Eggs, larvae and fry are well supplied with oxygen by the flow of water that the sponge generates. The young fish only leave the sponge when they are 8 to 10 mm long.
