Course of the road
|
The Riverina Highway is a trunk road in the south of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects Talgarno Road and Bethanga Road in Bellbridge with the Cobb Highway in Deniliquin .
course
The road begins in Bellbridge , about 12 km east of Albury on the east bank of Lake Hume , on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Through Albury, where it crosses the Hume Freeway (NM31), it follows the Murray River on its north bank to west-northwest to Corowa . It crosses the Riverina after which it is named.
In Corowa the road turns north-north-west and takes another west-north-west course about 10 km further. At Finley it crosses the Newell Highway (N39) and now follows the Mulwala Canal , an irrigation canal of the Riverina. 60 km further west, the Riverina Highway reaches the Cobb Highway (R75) in Deniliquin, where it ends.
Character and meaning
The highway runs through irrigated land along the Murray River, where farms, orchards and vineyards define the landscape. It connects this region via the Hume Highway in Albury to the important markets in Sydney and Melbourne . Because of the scenic landscape, the Riverina Highway is also a popular tourist route.
