Cobb Highway in Hay |
The Cobb Highway is a state road in the west of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects the Barrier Highway south of Wilcannia with the Murray Valley Highway and the Northern Highway in Moama / Echuca .
course
The highway begins 20 km south of the small town of Wilcannia on the Darling River , where it branches off to the south-southeast from the Barrier Highway (R32), which turns east there. The Er continues its way through Ivanhoe and turns south after crossing the Lachlan River .
In Hay it takes the Mid-Western Highway (R24) coming from the east and crosses the Sturt Highway (N20) and the Murrumbidgee River . In Deniliquin , the Cobb Highway takes the Riverina Highway (R58) coming from the east , crosses the Edward River and follows it upstream to the south. In Moama it reaches the Murray River and crosses it and with it the border to Victoria . On the south bank of the river it meets the Murray Valley Highway (B400) and the Northern Highway (B75) in Echuca and ends.
The highway runs north through the semi-desert south of the Darling River, then through open pastureland and finally, in the Riverina , through farmland on which grain is grown.
history
The Cobb Highway was after the operator of several coach lines in the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, Cobb and Co. named. It follows the course of the old stagecoach route through the Riverina.
In the 1930s, today's Cobb Highway was proclaimed as part of State Road 21, which also included the roads north of Wilcannia to White Cliffs, Tibooburra and Warri Gate on the Queensland border . On February 9, 1945, the highways in this area were only numbered and the Cobb Highway was created in memory of the former stagecoach operator.
In 1954, the Cobb Highway in New South Wales and the Northern Highway in Victoria were numbered National Route 75.
In May 1969 a new bridge was built over the Edward River in Deniliquin to replace the old wooden bridge from 1895. In June 1973 the old bridge over the Murrumbidgee River in Hay (drawbridge, built in 1874) was replaced by a new one.
The Long Paddock Project
The Cobb Highway is part of a very important network of cattle drive routes through New South Wales. Concentrated on this highway is a major tourism initiative called The Long Paddock , which was developed by the Local Government Areas along the route, Murray Shire , Deniliquin Council , Conargo Shire , Hay Shire and Central Darling Shire . The project aims to support the communities along the Cobb Highway through a dynamic cultural mountain route. It uses the consistent theme of traffic, which includes historical aspects as well as creative interpretation and local environmental protection, to connect the communities along the highway.
Road conditions and speed limits
The two-lane road is paved for the first 50 km from Wilcannia. From there it leads as an unpaved slope to approx. 10 km north of Ivanhoe. From then on it is paved again until it ends in Echuca.
With the exception of three short sections, the maximum permissible speed is 100 km / h. On a stretch from Ivanhoe to south of Mossgiel, another stretch from Booligal on the Lachlan River to Hay, and finally the stretch from Hay to 40 km north of Deniliquin, the speed limit is 110 km / h.
The Cobb Highway is one of the most remote and may be one of the least traveled highways in New South Wales.
