The Edward River is a river in the southwest of the Riverina region in the south of the Australian state of New South Wales . It is a northern branch of the Murray River .
Cadell Fault
About 25,000 years ago, a north-south trending earth fold formed in the area between the present-day cities of Echuca and Deniliquin, which prevented the Murray River from flowing westward. The Murray River flowed around the fold of the earth in the north and created the bed of today's Edward River. The Goulburn River was also dammed up and formed a lake. Later the waters of this lake broke through the folds of the earth and drained over the old bed of the Goulburn River. The Murray River joined this run, creating its current bed. About 1/3 of the water in the Murray River now runs through the old river bed of the Goulburn River (which is the new one of the Murray River) while 2/3 drains off via the Edward River.
River course
The river branches off to the north at Picnic Point as a result of the Cadell Fault from the Murray River and flows through the eucalyptus forest to Deniliquin . There it turns its course to the northwest, parallel to the Murray River. It runs through scrubland to the small town Kyalite where the Wakool River into it empties . About 15 kilometers further west, at Haysdale , he meets the main arm of the Murray River again.
