New South Wales

The Barrier Highway branches off the Mitchell Highway (R32 / R71) to the west in Nyngan. After 131 km it reaches the town of Cobar , which for the most significant rock art of the Aborigines is known throughout New South Wales. More than 1,300 rock art can be found in the area around Mount Grenfell , about 40 km northwest of the city. There is a large copper and zinc mine north of Cobar.

242 km west of Cobar, the Barrier Highway meets the Cobb Highway (R75) coming from the south and together with it reaches the city of Wilcannia 19 km further north , where it crosses the Darling River .

Another 200 km further west-southwest is Broken Hill, the last town on the highway in New South Wales. It is known as the Capital of the Outback and as a station of the Indian Pacific . Broken Hill is the only city in New South Wales that uses the Australian Central Standard Time , which is otherwise only used in South Australia and the Northern Territory . The world's largest mining group, BHP Billiton, was founded there. In the city, the Silver City Highway (B79) crosses the Barrier Highway in a north-south direction. 50 km west-southwest of Broken Hill, the Barrier Highway reaches the border with South Australia.

South Australia

In South Australia, the Barrier Highway runs in a wide arc in a south-westerly direction towards the capital Adelaide .

It leads through wide, sparsely populated areas before reaching Burra, the first larger town. Burra is an old mining town that is now a large open-air museum of mining. Today the small town is the center of an agriculturally important region and in 1988 Burra was officially awarded the title Merino Capital of the World .

About 70 km further south at the village of Giles Corner , the Barrier Highway meets the Main North Road (A32 / B82) and ends. The Main North Road continues south to central Adelaide.
