Course of the road
|
The Silver City Highway is a trunk road in the west of the Australian state of New South Wales . It runs in a north-south direction along the border of New South Wales and South Australia and connects the Stuart Highway in Buronga on the Murray River with the Noccundra Warri Warri Gate Road at Warri Warri Gate on the Queensland border .
course
The Silver City Highway begins in the small town of Buronga , a northern suburb of Mildura . There it branches off from the Sturt Highway (N20) as a northern continuation of the Calder Highway (A79) coming from the south to west-northwest. The town of Wentworth, where the Darling River meets the Murray River, is 14 miles away . There the road turns north and follows the Great Darling Anabranch . To the east of the road there are several larger salt lakes in this area . After 265 km the mining metropolis Broken Hill is reached. There the Silver City Highway crosses the Barrier Highway (R32).
The path continues north through the uninhabited outback . After 176 km the road reaches the Packsaddle rest house and after another 160 km the small town of Tiboobarra on the southeast edge of the Sturt National Park . There a 139 km long track branches off to the northwest to Cameron Corner , the most northwest corner of the state of New South Wales. The Silver City Highway continues north through the national park and ends after another 53 km at Warri Warri Gate on the Queensland border. There is a passage in the dingo fence that runs through the Australian outback. From there an unpaved road, the Noccundra Warri Warri Gate Road, leads further north.
Road conditions and gas stations
North of Broken Hill, the Silver City Highway is partially unpaved, although the expansion continues over time. On the 265 km stage from Wentworth to Broken Hill there is only one roadhouse , Coombah , where fuel and groceries are sold. Between Broken Hill and Tibooburra you can refuel at the Packsaddle rest house .
numbering
The Silver City Highway was numbered as Route 79. In the course of renaming the Australian highways, it is proposed to replace this old numbering with the designation B79. The numbering has already been changed in the southern section between Buronga and Broken Hill.
