The Department of Transport and Main Roads is an agency of the Queensland Government in Australia .
It is responsible for the Queensland road network with a total length of over 33,000 km and 6,500 bridges as well as shipping routes and rail traffic.
The Department was established in April 2009 when the former Queensland Transport and Department of Main Roads merged. The agency employs over 10,000 people. She works closely with Queensland Rail , the port authorities, Translink and other regional and state authorities, as well as industry and communities.
The department is divided into five areas: strategy and planning, investment and program development, traffic safety, operations and industrial cooperation. Maritime Safety Queensland is a division of the authority responsible for the Queensland waterways.
