Coordinates: 31 ° 34 ′ S , 143 ° 22 ′ E Central Darling Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 53,492.2 km² and has around 1,800 inhabitants.
Central Darling is located deep in the west of the state about 960 km away from the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 57 hamlets and hamlets, including Ivanhoe, Menindee , White Cliffs and Wilcannia . The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the city of Wilcannia in the center of the LGA, where almost 550 residents live.
The Shire is the largest LGA in New South Wales, but there are only three LGAs with fewer residents.

The Central Darling Shire Council has twelve members who are elected by the residents of the three wards (four councilors each from A, B and C ward). These three districts are defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
Since November 20, 2006, only three of the four Councilors of the C Ward belong to the council, so that the council will only have eleven members until the next election in autumn 2008.
