The area was 8,751 km² and had the third smallest population of all LGAs in the state with just over 1,500. In 2016 it went up in the newly created Edward River Council .
Conargo was located in the south of the state in the region around the border river Murray River about 500 km west of the Australian capital Canberra and 330 km north of Melbourne . The area included 45 hamlets and hamlets, including Blighty, Booroorban, Conargo, Mayrung, Pretty Pine, Wanganella and part of Deniliquin . Conargo was the only LGA in which the council was not based in the main town, but in the next larger town, in Deniliquin on the southern edge of the LGA.
